Singapore Institute of Technology

Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT) is Singapore’s University of Applied Learning. SIT’s vision is to be a leader in innovative learning by integrating learning, industry and community. Its mission is to nurture and develop individuals who build on their interests and talents to impact society in meaningful ways.

SIT offers applied degree programmes targeted at growth sectors of the economy. These degree programmes are grouped into five clusters – Engineering (ENG), Chemical Engineering and Food Technology (CEFT), Infocomm Technology (ICT), Health and Social Sciences (HSS), as well as Design and Specialised Businesses (DSB).

With a unique pedagogy that integrates work and study, the degree programmes feature the signature Integrated Work Study Programme (IWSP) that exemplifies the best of university-industry collaboration. Students are immersed in the real working world for up to 12 months, allowing them to gain practical job skills and be work-ready. As part of the applied learning curriculum, applied research is weaved into students’ learning experience, where they work on real industry problems and create solutions to meet industry needs. By working closely with the industry, students gain insights and emerge as deep specialists in their chosen fields.

The university advocates the work-learn continuum and strives to instil within its students a culture of lifelong learning and continuous upskilling and reskilling. SIT also aims to cultivate in its students four distinctive traits that form the SIT-DNA: Thinking Tinkerers; Able to Learn, Unlearn and Relearn; Catalysts for Transformation; and Grounded in the Community.

Established in 2009 and gazetted as an autonomous university in 2014, SIT currently has six distributed campuses, with its main campus in SIT@Dover. The future campus will be part of the Punggol Digital District that will feature a fit-for-purpose campus where the reimagining of higher education can take place within a community setting.

Process Safety Module and Workshop

Of relevance to SIScon Online’s focus on Safety Instrumented Systems is Process Safety, an essential module covered in SIT’s Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering degree programmes. Designed to provide a complete grounding in all aspects of industry safety, the module introduces Process Safety as a disciplined framework for managing the integrity of hazardous operating systems and processes. Students are taught aspects of safety, risks and communications, and trained on techniques and regulatory provisions required to ensure the safe and efficient operation of processes, as well as the use of practical tools relating to hazards.

Process Safety is also offered as a series of workshops by SITLEARN Professional Development, the lifelong learning division of SIT, to help people tasked with safety responsibilities gain the engineering and management expertise needed to safely operate a plant in Singapore. The Process Safety workshops are stackable towards an SIT Specialist Certificate in Process Safety, or can be taken individually as a single module.
